ironywatch: “trendy tees” from wal-greens
| written by geoffrey on 07/10/08 | 2 comments |
i’m always on the look out for new things to appreciate ironically. this is ironywatch.
back in the day, hipsters looked for funny and amusing t-shirts in thrift stores. a shirt that said, “alamo construction company” or “benjamin rigman’s bar mitzvah ‘94″ would be funny if worn by someone with no connection to said company or event. life was good.
however, like every cool “indie” thing to do, it eventually needed to crossover into the mainstream. clothing outlets like hot topic and even abercrombie and fitch decided to make new novelty shirts with funny graphics on them, which kids were all about. sometimes they were even racist!
now, trendy t-shirts are everywhere. it’s such big business that you can even buy them at your local wal-greens for $5 a pop. here are some examples:

michael jackson performed by showbiz pizza animatrons

you know what’s better than live performers at a restaurant? animatrons. no spontaneity or human emotion on stage - just good ol’ fashion soulless, robotic perfection. here’s the showbiz pizza band, “the rock-afire explosion,” performing a medley of michael jackson hits.
who’s bad? the gorilla keyboardist. he’s been dealing coke in the back alley.

battle of the nintendocore bands

in this corner, we have “the advantage.” these guys are serious musicians. listen to how they tackle the complex, rockin’ soundtrack to mega man 2. i didn’t know the human hand could move that fast. holy crap. these guys are like that jam band in high school that got hired to play all the town events, the guys who dominated all their music classes.
in this corner, we have “minibosses.” these guys fucking rock. listen to how they suck every bit of kickass from the mega man 2 music. they look like they get some serious groupie action even though they’re video game nerds. these guys are like the garage band that got banned from all the town events, the guys that dropped out of high school and are still touring small clubs together.
you decide: musical prowess or pure rockability?

everybody polkamon!

i’m not a big fan of pokemon, but weird al’s take on the japanese phenomenon is one of his tightest polkas ever. hey, they might be giants did a fantastic song for the mighty morphin power rangers movie, so weird al is allowed to cash in once and awhile.

“the most unwanted song”: a 25 minute ‘masterpiece’
| written by geoffrey on 04/23/08 | 2 comments |
a few years ago, my sister played me this amazing song. it was created in the mid-90’s by surveying folks about what elements they hated most in music. the answers they got were things like opera singers, jingles and children’s choirs. then the pollsters, two russian post-modern artists, created a song which features everything people said they hated.
you can listen to it here. it’s worth sitting through the whole thing, just for the experience.
as a contrast, they also made a song which includes elements everyone said they liked. that one’s online now too.
