nintendocore battle of the bands: the finals
| written by daroff on 07/16/08 | 3 comments |
you have spoken and it’s time for the final round of the battle of the bands, nintendocore style. this time our bands will take on the musical stylings of super mario brothers.
in this corner, we have minibosses. their alternative rock stylings tear up the acid dream that is super mario 2. if you had any doubt as to their insane riffing, check it out in this guitar hero knock off.
and in this corner, we have powerglove. their epic metal take on the original super mario brothers theme kicks the crap out of your parents 8-bit track.
you decide: alt. rock or epic metal?

battle of the nintendocore bands

in this corner, we have “the advantage.” these guys are serious musicians. listen to how they tackle the complex, rockin’ soundtrack to mega man 2. i didn’t know the human hand could move that fast. holy crap. these guys are like that jam band in high school that got hired to play all the town events, the guys who dominated all their music classes.
in this corner, we have “minibosses.” these guys fucking rock. listen to how they suck every bit of kickass from the mega man 2 music. they look like they get some serious groupie action even though they’re video game nerds. these guys are like the garage band that got banned from all the town events, the guys that dropped out of high school and are still touring small clubs together.
you decide: musical prowess or pure rockability?

the garfield rap clocks in at over 6 minutes!
| written by geoffrey on 06/11/08 | leave a comment |
garfield is certainly not the only rapping cat, but he raps longer than any other i can think of. this track for garfield and friends is 6:17 min, and by the middle you can hear lorenzo music barely able to keep up with the beat.
it’s okay though - the fun of “the garfield rap” is that it utilizes just about every music video visual from the early 90’s, including black and white mixed with color and a morphing sequences around the 4 min mark.
meow.

ironywatch - eminem’s “without me”
| written by geoffrey on 06/05/08 | leave a comment |
i’m always on the look out for new things to appreciate ironically. this is ironywatch.
in “the real slim shady,” eminem claims he killed dr. dre, that christina aguilera gave him a venereal disease, and tells will smith to fuck off. it may not be the most controversial thing now, but at the time it was heady stuff.
in this follow-up album’s dis track, “without me,” he’s dressed as the boy wonder, and the video takes shots at dick cheney, survivor and daytime talk shows. it’s like an episode of madtv, but thankfully shorter. however, the barely-rhyming chorus and infectious melody make this painful follow-up an essential part of any ironic rap playlist. what would we do “without” slim shady? jesus, i have no fucking clue!
so everybody, just follow me — and ironywatch eminem’s “without me.”

everybody polkamon!

i’m not a big fan of pokemon, but weird al’s take on the japanese phenomenon is one of his tightest polkas ever. hey, they might be giants did a fantastic song for the mighty morphin power rangers movie, so weird al is allowed to cash in once and awhile.

TGIF - britney spears goes “crazy” with sabrina
| written by geoffrey on 05/09/08 | 2 comments |
gonna have some fun, show you how it’s done - TGIF!
this clip from sabrina the teenage witch is how i choose to remember britney spears: as a sexually exploited, admittedly lonely teen with big breasts, and not in her depressing train-wreck period. of course, the best part of this clip is neither young britney or elaine-dancing melissa joan hart, but rather martin mull forcibly getting down to britney’s “crazy.”
if you’re gonna feel bad for anyone in this world, make it martin mull!
