ben affleck goes on a voyage of the mimi

many kids were forced to watch voyage of the mimi, a multi-part educational tv series meant to be shown in classrooms. you might have vague memories of dozing off during this science show, but you probably don’t remember that ben affleck got his start on this series, as one of the kid actors / interviewers.
here’s little ben quizzing a scientist in an arctic wind tunnel. be sure to check out 1:28 for a glimpse into ben affleck’s soul.

super trivia sunday! g.i. joe

here’s a memory challenge. the “knowing is half the battle” segment about learning to tread water to avoid drowning features which joe?
the first person to comment with the correct answers (limit one try per person) will get their name in the hall of fame on the side bar and get to lord it over everyone. don’t be discouraged if someone else answers first; there’s a good chance that person is wrong.

michael jackson performed by showbiz pizza animatrons
| written by geoffrey on 07/08/08 | leave a comment |
you know what’s better than live performers at a restaurant? animatrons. no spontaneity or human emotion on stage - just good ol’ fashion soulless, robotic perfection. here’s the showbiz pizza band, “the rock-afire explosion,” performing a medley of michael jackson hits.
who’s bad? the gorilla keyboardist. he’s been dealing coke in the back alley.

ironywatch: big fat liar
| written by geoffrey on 07/03/08 | 2 comments |
i’m always on the look out for new things to appreciate ironically. this is ironywatch.
frankie muniz may be best known as malcolm or agent cody banks, but his greatest achievement — a short story he wrote for school — has just been stolen from him by evil producer marty wolf (played by academy award nominated paul giamatti). uh oh. you don’t want to mess with this kid, marty!
welcome to the masterpiece that is big fat liar.
i had the pleasure of being forced to watch this on a greyhound bus ride, where they blast the audio over the pa system, so trying to drown out the sound with your own headphones is a futile waste of time. let me tell you, paul giamatti gets the shit pranked out of him in this film. here are a few ways in which frankie teaches paul not to plagorize:
- he turns his skin blue
- he turns his hair orange
- he superglues his cell phone to his ear
- he sabotages his car
- …which causes marty to crash into a monster truck. just like in real life.
the lesson of the film is: don’t fuck with 14-year-old frankie muniz. frankie, along with an unlikely team-up of misfits wronged by paul giamatti, will destroy your life. i wish i wielded that kind of power, but all i can do is put this movie on ironywatch.

battle of the nintendocore bands
| written by daroff on 07/02/08 | 8 comments |
in this corner, we have “the advantage.” these guys are serious musicians. listen to how they tackle the complex, rockin’ soundtrack to mega man 2. i didn’t know the human hand could move that fast. holy crap. these guys are like that jam band in high school that got hired to play all the town events, the guys who dominated all their music classes.
in this corner, we have “minibosses.” these guys fucking rock. listen to how they suck every bit of kickass from the mega man 2 music. they look like they get some serious groupie action even though they’re video game nerds. these guys are like the garage band that got banned from all the town events, the guys that dropped out of high school and are still touring small clubs together.
you decide: musical prowess or pure rockability?
