nintendo revisited: super mario brothers

the designer of this game was brilliant, and this new yorky guy playing is hilarious

this is it, folks. this will be my last nintendo revisited. i’ve said it many times, but growing up, i didn’t have many nintendo games. freshman year of college, i played a bit on my roommate’s emulator (thank you, lenny). junior and senior year, i played on my friend dana’s nintendo. she had a couple good games, but i was too busy to get into any of them. life has a way of cutting into your nintendo time. if you want to ship me your favorite nintendo games to play and write about, i will never say no to free things. i also accept gifts of cash.

i spend a lot of time talking about, writing about, reading about, watching videos about super mario brothers , but there really is nothing like going back and playing it. it’s not as complicated as its successors, but none of those games live up to the elegance of the original. i actually beat it on the first try. i haven’t beaten this game in 10 years, and it feels really freakin good.

okay yeah i know, this wasn’t really a nintendo game. apparently, if you make a bible themed game, nintendo looks the other way when you kife their game slot. i’ve shoe horned this game into here because it’s the funniest damned thing i’ve ever played. from the ridiculous music that loops an 8-bit version of "father abraham had seven sons, seven sons had father abraham" to the awesome bible questions between levels, this puzzle game trumps all other ridiculous nintendo knock-offs.

need proof? watch the video closely and you’ll see that little moses shoots little w’s at people. you know what that w stands for? that’s the word of god, people. moses runs around the screen killing people with the word of the almighty. if moses was history’s greatest badass, then video game moses has to be history’s most badass video game character. i’m sorry people, the word of god trumps the mega blaster.

nintendo revisited: mega man 2

on my freshman year college roommate’s emulator, i played every single mega man, so i can say without a doubt that mega man 2 is by far and away the best mega man of the bunch. mega man x was sort of close, but by a huge margin. everything about this game rocked: sweet level design, rockin bosses, and the best 8-bit music score ever. i admit to having never actually beat it on my own, but that doesn’t make me enjoy it any less. i fucking love this game.

also, like i said before, i can play bubble man’s theme on guitar, and that makes me happy.

i’ve pretty much already said what i have to say about this game last august . i just played about seven hours of straight of it trying to find one good thing about it. despite my best efforts to find evidence to the contrary, this game sucks.

nintendo revisited: tetris

wow, i totally believe this kid was the first to max out tetris ever. like for totally.

i don’t get it. i still, years later, do not understand why this game is popular. it’s boring. the flashies give me a headache.

oh yeah, and my mom liked it. what the hell am i missing?

nintendo revisited: teenage mutant ninja turtles

despite all the negative press this game gets, i kind of enjoyed it. in fact, i discovered the problem most of those amateur reviewers have is they just weren’t good at it. at least one of them simply wasn’t aware of the game’s coolest feature. it’s a single player games, but you can switch to any turtle at any time. that’s a sweet feature. if i want to do a lot of damage, i go with donatello. if i want to take out a lot of bad guys in no time, i go with leonardo. if i want to go on a suicide mission through a bad guy filled room, i go with michelangelo and raphael.

my only problem with this game is actually one jump. there is literally one jump i just couldn’t do. the overhang is too low for the distance needed to travel. i would do so well then hit this one jump and fail over and over and over again. check out the speed run above and you’ll see that despite the liberties the game takes with turtles villains, it’s a pretty darned good game.
