here’s a strange little cartoon from the mid-80s with a surprising creative pedigree. galaxy high school was created by harry potter director chris columbus, with character designs were done reluctantly by john k. of ren and stimpy fame. the girl with the multiple mouths is nancy “bart” cartright and the theme was written by eagles guitarist don felder. with that kind of creative power, it should be no surprise that it lasted one season.

TGIF - mr. cooper theme song evolution

gonna have some fun, show you how it’s done - TGIF!
hangin’ with mr. cooper had three different theme songs over its 5 season run. let’s go through them:
season one (’92): this theme was sung by en vogue and is probably the best remembered version.
season two (’93): a cover of the song soul man. i guess they wanted to show that cooper had soul.
seasons three-five (’94-’97): they finally settled on this james brown sung version. feh.
no offense to the hardest working man in show business, but i think they should have stuck to the original song. it’s much more memorable, and they could have updated the sound of it to feel more late-90s, rather than change the whole song. in my mind, cooper will always be “oh so cool.” yo coop!

strange internet: pretty fly for an anime

ranma 1/2 is pretty strange, perhaps even by anime standards. it’s about a boy who changes into a girl when splashed with hot water (plus his dad turns into a panda). someone must have thought the lead character was “pretty fly,” because here’s an AMV mashup of ranma 1/2 and offspring’s “pretty fly for a white guy.” i especially like the reaction to vanilla ice at 1:30.

we made some awesome changes to the site today. here’s a run-down:
1. tabs up top, which highlight our running features like weekly trivia and saturday morning cartoons.
2. new cake! we got sick of having our dumb mugs on the thing, so we turned it into a terrified person.
3. we’re broadening our fucking horizons. we’re gonna blog everyday on retro culture, like usual, but over time we’re gonna start blogging on other stuff geeks like, which may or may not be retro related. to start, the “strange internet,” which includes pointless mashups and weird youtube oddities.
in conclusion, enjoy our slightly different website!
