ironywatch: bowling for soup

i’m always on the look out for new things to appreciate ironically. this is ironywatch.

get ready to kind of rock out!

it’s fitting that one of bowling for soup’s big hits is called “almost.”  that’s the perfect word to describe this band.  they almost write good lyrics — if only they were a little smarter or a little stupider.  they almost rock — if only they were a little popier (okgo) or a little rockier (foo fighters).  the one thing you can say is that they write memorable hooks… which are almost likable.

for this reason, i really love “punk pop.”  bands like american hi-fi and sr-71 know how to write catchy melodies and singable lyrics that leave you with the most hilariously sleazy feeling after listening to them.  like chaperoning an eighth grade dance and checking out the girls butts.  “work it, lindsay silverberg– oh no, what am i doing?”

bowling for soup is truly the shredded wheat of bands.  the adult in you says, “turn off this empty pop garbage and listen to only philip glassnyeah!“  however, the 11-year-old kid in you says, “fart, fart, fart - “1985″ is awesome!“  i’m not going to disagree with my inner 11-year-old, even though i know he gets fewer than 1/4 of the references in the lyrics.

this is ironic punk rock 101 - bowling for soup, you’ve been ironywatched.
