saddest garfield cartoon ever
written by geoffrey on 05/28/08

this short, called “diana’s piano,” was part of garfield: his 9 lives, which was a cartoon adaptation of the book by the same title. the book is better: some of the scariest and strangest stuff was neutered for television. however, this short made for the cartoon version never fails to make me sad.

it’s a bit wasp-y and cloy, but also very effective. garfield was a lot sweeter in his past lives, lol.

I was expecting something else. Have you ever seen the Garfield comic where he wakes up, and the house is old and decrepit and neither Odie or John is there? All the text in the comic explains Garfield is either dieing or has gone crazy being abandoned.

Also, I didn’t know Jim Davis did anything other then the traditional Garfield.

you can read all about that spooky set of comics on the ol’ wikipedia. apparently, jim davis just wanted to stretch his legs a little (they’re not considered “canon,” just a halloween story). it seems he used to get that impulse more in the early days than now. he wrote “9 lives” in 1984.
