ironywatch: smash mouth’s “all star”
written by geoffrey on 05/08/08

i’m always on the look out for new things to appreciate ironically. welcome to ironywatch.

a few years ago, i don’t think i could call loving smash mouth’s “all star” ironic - just bad taste. the song was played out in commercials, movies and sports events to the point of madness. it became excessive and annoying. were the digimon really all-stars? probably not.

well, it’s been almost 10 years since the song’s original release, and i never realized this before, but the music video is themed around the film mystery men. major irony points there. the sage philosophies in the lyrics (”only shooting stars break the mold”) and peppy jock rock feel of the song, including unnecessary dj scratches, cause that’s what the kids like, make me nostalgic for a simpler time — the late 90swhen all america worried about was eminem and pie fucking.

i’m ready to smile and pretend to like this jam again. smash mouth’s “all star”: you’ve been ironywatched.

Inst it a bit inappropriate for those cheerleaders to be doing their routine while Mrs.All-star is being crushed alive by a bus?
