nintendo revisited: tetris written by daroff on 04/15/08
wow, i totally believe this kid was the first to max out tetris ever. like for totally.
i don’t get it. i still, years later, do not understand why this game is popular. it’s boring. the flashies give me a headache.
oh yeah, and my mom liked it. what the hell am i missing?

Youve got a good point. Ive never really been a big fan of Tetris, but peole are always telling me its the best puzzle game ever. Its not. Wario’s Woods is. Tetris ATTACK is however quite good. But you have to admit that Tetris A is an awesome song no matter how you feel about the game.

in the name of fair and balanced reviewing, i should give props where props are due. the music was awesome. russian music in general is pretty bad ass. the soviet national anthem was one of the most intense songs i’ve ever heard.

i disagree!
people like tetris because it’s perfect. fun, simple, and highly addictive game play that’s easy to learn but difficult to master - packaged with great music and a rocket that blasts off when you win. your mom liked it, i liked it — it’s without a doubt the most popular video game ever made.
recently, though, i’ve found a game i like even better: super puzzle fighter. as i’ve always said, “the only way to improve tetris is to add street fighter characters.”

I beleive that Super Mario Bros is more popular :p I also still think Wario’s Woods is a better puzzle game. I dont hate Tetris, but I dont love it and im not good at it.
geoffrey Apr 15
i respect your love of wario’s woods. i’m all about wario and his insane love of money.
you’re right about mario bros in terms of sales. mario bros has sold 40 million on NES, tetris 33 million on game boy. though when you factor in cell phones, pc and other consoles, i wonder if that would even the score some.
however, in terms of who’s playing tetris demographically, it feels like *everyone* has played tetris in some form or another, while a ton of people 35 and under have played mario bros.
regardless, i’m gonna make a correction: “tetris is one of the most popular video games ever made.” done!

Yeah, Tetris has lots of medium its played on. But if your counting cell phones, etc. for Tetris you gotta throw in things like Super Mario Brothers DX for the gameboy and the Wii virtual councel version and… heck, even Animal Crossing (as long as you have a gameshark.) Although, I bet you’re right overall. Because of Tetris simple yet fun nature it has been ported and re-ported to everything imaginable to play between classes and stuff. I could have got Tetris on my phone, but I downladed Bubble Bobble instead. It is a choice I will never regret.

Bubble Bobble is awesome. I love that at the end, you learn the meaning of friendship.

I said a similar statement about Dr. Mario the other day, and I thought people would agree with me, but everyone LOVED it.
Well I love the original Tetris anyway, especially two player mode. BUT, I think if I were to spend my time playing any puzzle game, it would be Tetris Attack/Puzzle League/Whatever it’ll be called next.
daroff Apr 16
did the original tetris have two player mode? i’ll have to check on that when i get home.
HexenDarkside Apr 16
the Tengen NES version has the two player option.
daroff Apr 16
but was that the original? i don’t think the version i have has 2 player. is that version older or newer than the one alex is talking about?
geoffrey Apr 16
game boy tetris had a two player mode. there was a data cable that could connect two game boys, so you could play simultaneously. when one player got a line, it put junk blocks onto the other player’s screen.
it worked shittily, but it was novel for 1989.
Alex Apr 17
Yeah, plus I believe the very first Arcade version had a two player mode as well.
