deathwatch: excessive reference-based humor written by geoffrey on 02/14/08
the simpsons popularized cultural-references in comedy dialog, and family guy took that technique and happily drove it off a cliff. but are excessive references to pop culture in character dialog (and on real life t-shirts) about to experience a “disco sucks” style backlash? rumblings on the internet make me think “yes,” just like christopher walken says ‘yes’ to more cowbell. remember the cowbell sketch? remember it?
- here’s the new diablo cody screenplay, according to the folks at something awful. let’s all wish her lots of luck on that eight is enough reference she has planned.

- sick of people wearing old logos on shirts without any added cleverness, diesel sweeties made this.
- this blog is a good psycho-analysis of the situation, which makes reference to meet the spartans, so i don’t have to.
i don’t think this is a backlash against nostalgia in general, or even to referencing and remembering stuff from the past. it’s more about the mindless act of referencing pop culture without having anything to actually say about it, and thinking you’re incredibly clever for doing so. clever, just like the smurfs when… eh, fuck it.

GREAT SCOTT!
Do you think its the truth that overquoting things is bad?
You can’t handel the truth!
But seriously, I quote stuff all the time and its VERY NIIIIICE! It makes me S-M-R-T… I mean S-M-A-R-T to quote things. You know how it is, When you’re pushed, qouteings as easy as breathing. However, you seem to think Thats no good! Smurfing a quote a few times a day wont cause all life as you know you stop instantaneously and cause every molecule in your body to explode at the speed of light. So to quotes I say: I wish I knew how to quit you!
th-th-th-thats all, folks.
