request: “captain n” in smash brothers brawl
written by geoffrey on 02/11/08

warning: this blog contains spoilers about the upcoming super smash brothers brawl.

captainn.jpgi’ve had the pleasure of playing the new smash brothers for the wii, thanks to our friend spencer at siliconera. of course, it’s amazing. if you love smash brothers, as everyone does, you’ll love this update, which includes an epic story mode, level editor and a “calendar erase” feature, which cancels all your appointments for the next month so you can just enjoy this cool game.

one of the things that makes smash brothers unique is the endless references to weird forgotten nintendo iconography, like the inclusion of mr. game and watch in the last one (he’s back). in this one, r.o.b. the robot has a huge presence, and mario’s water-backpack from the super lame super mario sunshine is a weapon. that being said, if there’s all this relatively obscure stuff in smash brothers, how about at least a passing reference to captain n: the video game master who whet our appetites for this kind of nintendo cross-promotional love fest?

i was looking for kevin, but couldn’t find him. i wouldn’t expect him to be a player character (although that would be beyond awesome), but one key shout out to nintendo’s saturday morning crossover king is — i think — not unreasonable… i said, as nerdily as possible.

Anyone else used to turn their NES controller into a belt and run around with the Zapper?

    Anyone?

i did it as a halloween costume, of course. people stopped me on the street that year and said, “hey, you’re that nintendo guy!”

Captain N woulda been a cool support, or maybe just a tiny passing refrence. You got to play Brawl? Lucky bastrad. I just went and reserved it a few days ago.
As an NES collector I was really happy to see that ROB was in Brawl.
