help beowulf by not seeing “beowulf” written by asterios on 11/16/07
here’s what beowulf would be like with legos.
well, we all knew this would happen. we’ve been faced with a choice: go see beowulf this weekend, or instead, give that 10 dollars to help over half a million people displaced by cyclone sidr.
on one hand, beowulf is a pretty great movie. i saw it, and have to say, the acting was impeccable, particularly anthony hopkins. on the other hand, earlier today, an entire island in the barisal district was submerged under six feet of water, causing homes to be literally swept away and destroyed…
the writing in beowulf is phenomenal, which is no surprise given that the script was penned by neil gaiman, writer of the bestselling sandman series. however, don’t be so quick to side with beowulf - reports from the fragile delta regions of the bay of bengal indicate that rivers have swelled so high that water punched through mud embankments and washed away paddy and vegetable fields, ruining the year’s earnings for peasants who live off of those lands.
it’s a tough call!
but in this season of great holiday movies like beowulf, i’d advise you to do what beowulf would do, and not see beowulf. after all, beowulf’s a mighty warrior - he wouldn’t waste his time with simple entertainments. instead, beowulf would log on to the red cross/red crescent’s website at www.ifrc.org, much like he does in the movie, and do his part.
thanks for your time. and, like beowulf says during beowulf’s 3rd act battle montage, “donate money to those in need instead of seeing my movie!”
