interview: lauren frohne vs. step by step vs. SNL vs. the OC
written by geoffrey on 10/09/07

recently we ran this funny mashup video, which parodies snl’s parody of the oc using a classic scene from step by step:

the video is super popular on our site, so we wanted to get some insight on why it was made. here’s our interview with the mashup’s author lauren frohne, a writer from north carolina:

ot: what was your inspiration for making this?

lauren: I put this video together right after the first few spoofs started popping up on YouTube, mostly because I thought the concept could be even funnier if it didn’t involve guns and shooting. Some of my friends made videos too (the Daffy Duck/Bugs Bunny one, Raging Bull, and Happy Days jumping the shark) so we were all pretty psyched about it. Somehow, this food fight scene from Step by Step was the first thing I thought of - who knew memories of Step by Step were so fresh in my mind?

ot: how long did it take you to track down this specific clip?

lauren: I had to scour the internet for a good hour or two, and actually ended up snagging it from another YouTube video. The quality was sooo bad, like, I’m pretty sure the original person videotaped their television. Why someone would do that, I’m not really sure, but I’m glad they did. Finding good quality Step by Step clips on the internet is hard, though. One of the most hilarious parts of this video getting so much attention is when people leave comments on YouTube like “Good video, HORRIBLE quality.”

ot: whose family would you rather belong to: the lamberts or the fosters?

lauren: I definitely would have been a Lambert, and I thought about it extensively when I was younger. I was just like “Al” when I was a kid - a tomboy with a sassy attitude. I always thought we’d have made great sisters.

ot: follow-up question: how awesome is cody?

lauren: Totally. A small tidbit — the original ending of the video I made featured Cody walking in to stop the food fight and saying “Ooooh, Carol’s gonna be soooo maaaddddddd” and then all the kids hit him with, like, a million pies. It would have made for a nice dramatic ending; however, it also would made the video about 8 minutes long, and we all know the internet doesn’t have an attention span that long.

ot: you’re a very talented person - a professional writer/improv comedian/mashup artist - anything you’d like our audience to watch/read/or enjoy?

lauren: Have you seen the new Britney Spears video yet? Enjoy!

A few things I genuinely like include: a project my friend Charlie Todd started called Improv Everywhere, a webcomic a friend of mine writes called Bassist Wanted, books by Miranda July, McSweeney’s Quarterly Concern, and Gawker Media blogs.

I also recently saw Harry Potter 5 in 3D and I never ever want to watch another non-3D movie ever again. Ever.

That show makes me so queasy. Who insisted that Frank and Karen constantly be engaging in foreplay in front of the kids? When I was 13, the last thing I wanted to see was Patrick Duffy’s chest hair every time I TGIF’d.
