top 5 younger versions of popular characters
written by jenni on 09/04/07

oh, to be young again! the 80s and 90s brought a slew of explorations into the younger times of some of pop culture’s most beloved characters. here is a list of some of my favorites…

5) james bond jr.

this cartoon ran from 1991 to 1992 and explored what would happen if you took the international spy and packed it into a teenager. and though this isn’t technically james bond as a kid (it’s actually bond’s nephew), it still explores a younger take on 007. complete with saving the girl.

4) superboy

before there was smallville, there was this show that ran four seasons from 1988 to 1992. i love it for the pure fact that it dials the 80s cheese-o-meter up to extreme! i mean, check out bigfoot…or should i say, “look at how i converted this cheap gorilla suit into a scary beast.” don’t worry, you just need to fly into him and everything will be okay.

3) young sherlock holmes

in 1985, barry levinson made the elementary decision to direct a film based on sherlock holmes’ time in school. what resulted was a movie which contained a ceremony scene that to this day still gives me nightmares. oh, and it was a throughly entertaining film. but still…nightmares.

2) young indiana jones

it is a sad, sad fact that the expensiveness of shooting this show lead it to only survive one season (1992 - 1993), because it was truly a masterpiece. and though it would have been lovely had river phoenix been able to reprise his role as young indy, sean patrick flannery is a just as easy-on-the-eyes choice. not to mention the bonus of an even younger young indy in some episodes! the good news is that it’s finally going to make it’s way onto dvd with volume 1 set for release on october 23rd. you can bet my halloween costume this year will be young indy-related (a Suffragette perhaps?).

1) muppet babies

what should i say about muppet babies? they’re adorable! what else do you need!? best idea for a younger, cuter version of something that’s already pretty damn cute to begin with!
