ever since the japanese started exporting video games to the united states, they’ve fucked up the japanese to english translation. to be perfectly honest, i never even heard “all your base are belong to us” until about a month ago. the reason is that my parents thought i’d get more out of game show adaptation nintendo games, like jeopardy and win, lose, or draw, than fun nintendo games.

for those of you who never saw the game show win, lose or draw, it consisted of two teams comfortably seated on couches playing pictionary. the nintendo game is the same thing, and when a team answers correctly, a word bubble pops up with such exclamations as “super” and “very special” and “hairy.” i kid you not. the winning team exclaims, “hairy.”

while the rest you were cracking up at “your base are belong to us,” my friends spent hours trying to figure what the hell they were actually trying to say. was it “hooray?” or does hairyness actually have some celebratory connotation in japanese?

we were seven-years-old; it was hilarious. trust me.
