gargoyles and shakespeare… and star trek? written by daroff on 08/22/07
get yourself caught up on demona and the thane
imagine a world where the writings of william shakespeare were actually more interpretations of actual events than mere fiction. imagine a world where important characters are voiced by actors who played on star trek. the writers of gargoyles under stand one fundamental principal: there’s nothing smart people love more than shakespeare and star trek. the writers folded seemlessly into their storylines a midsummer night’s dream and … the scottish play. for fear of the ghost of the scottish thane descending on this site, i will not speak his name. let’s just call him mac-scottish-thane.
in the gargoyles world, puck, oberon, titania, mac-scottish-thane, lady mac-scottish-thane, duncan, the three witches were all real people. you better believe these people would show up again in the show. for those of you who want to catch up on dvd, i won’t give away how deeply these characters are woven into the gargoyles world, but i will tell you to pay very close attention to who plays the voices of puck and titania. that’s right, brent spiner (star trek:tng’s cmdr. data) and kate mulgrew (star trek: voyager’s capt. janeway). recognizing these voices is actually a key to figuring out a major part of the show.
mac-scottish-thane has somehow lived a thousand years ago when the gargoyles were still in scotland, and is still alive in modern day manhattan. how you ask? the answer has a lot to do with the chief villains of the show xanatos and demona, voiced respectively by star trek: tng’s jonathan frakes and marina sirtis. amazingly, the show plays out just like the scottish play. everyone loves how shakespeare wrote the scene about the benevolent mac-scottish-thane teaming up with some gargoyles to fend off evil king duncan’s son and his evil english armies. between that and the “tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow” speech, shakespeare had himself a winner.
to really prove how awesome gargoyles, shakespeare, and star trek are, i tossed together a little mash up to prove my point. enjoy.
starring cmdr. data as puck and counselor troi as demona
