the wrestlerock rumble: when wrestling and hip-hop collide! written by eric on 06/13/07
what the hell is this? how did it happen? read on…
the american wrestling association. most modern wrestling fans have no clue what that is, but chances are wrestling would be very different without it.
you probably remember the wwf and the nwa/wcw fighting for saturday morning wrestling supremacy, but the american wrestling association was also trying to capture a television audience. the awa was created in the 1960s and started off succesfully, but things changed at the beginning of the eighties. there was one wrestler who thought he could be the world champion, the main event star, the backbone of the company. the awa didn’t think he could pull it off, so he never got to be champion. out of frustration, that wrestler quit and decided to work for the wwf.
that wrestler was hulk hogan.
by 1986, the awa was losing a serious amount of money; fans (and employees) were flocking to the wwf. the awa had one option: borrow some of the wwf’s successful ideas.
… i’m sorry, did i say borrow some? i meant unabashedly steal all of them.
the wwf’s wrestlemania is the superbowl of wrestling. to fight back, the awa came up with wrestlerock ‘86. the wwf helped promote wrestlemania by having matches on mtv, getting wrestlers to appear in music videos, and having pop stars like cyndi lauper and ozzy osbourne appear at wwf events.
the awa needed to blow the wwf out of the water and make wrestlerock ‘86 a huge hit. they had one option: the wrestlerock rumble.
wrestlerock ‘86 must have been an awesome success - cause they only did one of them!
……………………
by the way, with a song that features razor ramon and shawn michaels, how is that larry zbyszko and 52 year old nick bockwinkle are the best rappers?
