5 sitcom dances you can do at a party
written by geoffrey on 05/29/07

fresh_prince_cast.jpgmost people, like myself, get very self-conscious about dancing in public. you try to be cool, but end up looking like a fool (word). if you like to dance, but are worried about being laughed at, why not bust out with a dance move that’s intentionally dorky and is a funny pop culture reference to boot, so you’ll be laughed with instead (*studio audience applause*)?

so, fellow tv geeks, here are 5 dances that sitcom characters did, which you can do too:

#5: perfect strangers - “the dance of joy”

find a friend who’s as uncool as you are, and perform the simple but hilarious “dance of joy” from perfect strangers. it requires just a little coordination to get it right, and it’s ideal for a situation in which a circle has formed around you, and people are saying, “go [your name], it’s your birthday!” hey, what better occasion than your birthday for doing the dance of joy?

[special thanks to perfectstrangers.tv for the clip - check out their amazing library of promos!]

#4: saved by the bell - “hot sundae”

dorky girls, this is your chance to own the dance floor, like Bayside owns Valley at every fucking sport — go Bayside! three girls can probably learn the steps, or a cribbed version, in two hours, and then you can show off while any 80’s new wave song plays. compared to you three, all those girls gyrating their asses will look like fools on caffeine pills.

#3: the simpsons - “the bartman”

the difficulty level is high (what are the official steps exactly?), and you’ll want to actually slip “do the bartman” on the PA for the true effect, but this dance rules, and when has bart simpson ever backed down from a tricky stunt? he made a satirical principal skinner hot air balloon — doing the bartman is the least you can do in his honor.

#2: fresh prince of bel-air - “the carlton”

here’s a nerd dance that’s easy to do, hilarious, and will have cool people watching you say, “that guy remembers fresh prince of bel-air! he’s like an ironic john travolta from saturday night fever.” alfonso ribeiro was actually a well-known dancer as a kid. then he grew up and gave us this gift. “it’s not unusual” to love this dance!

#1: family matters - “the urkel”

the ultimate. those other four dances are great, but this is the best. if you are a guy, and you do the urkel at a party, you’ll get so much pussy. your problem will be: “what do i do with all this pussy?” and that’s a problem you want to have. so hitch up your pants, don’t spike the punch, and prepare to be better than elvis. did i mention the pussy you’ll be getting? good!

You forgot the most famous dance of all - the Elaine dance from Seinfeld.

How could you leave off Rerun’s “Pop and Lock” from What’s Happening??

  3. dave Jun 1

co-sign on the Elaine dance. I’d replace that one with the Saved by the Bell one.

    these are great suggestions!

i love the elaine dance (it’s funnier than hot sundae for sure), although it’d be painful to watch someone do it in real life, just like it is to watch on the show.

    *shudder*

rerun’s pop and lock is awesome. now i wish i’d made this list a top ten.

  14. chris Jun 2

My second grade homeroom class did the Urkel in the talent show. My mom videotaped it and we still have it buried somewhere.

house party and gene gene are great, but they’re not from sit-coms, so no dice. the batman dance is a total winner.

punani - you doing the urkel, combined with your first name, should get you super pussied to the extreme.

a-dog - you said it, man.

    janaeveya - ??? Wrong thread?

bob - and that’s why we have australia now.

chris - if you can find that tape and put it on youtube, you’ll be an overtime hero.

You’re all forgetting one of the great ’shark-jumping’ moments in Happy Days’ long history, i.e when Suzi Quatro came to town with her band and played ‘Do The Fonzie’ whilst an unenviable and visibly uncomfortable Henry Winkler, together with sundry extras, performed its uber-embarrassing near-Macarena dance moves. It’s also fun to insert one’s own musical soundtrack over the ‘Do The Fonzie’ footage (mine now features GG Allin’s ‘The Highest Power’).

Good list but ranking anything higher than the carlton is just insane. the carlton is the greatest dance in the history of the universe. everybody knows that
