when coolio won the mtv video music award for “gangsta’s paradise,” he said something to the effect of, “i can’t believe i won. california love, crossroads, those were both solid videos, you know, oh and so was doin’ it.” that got me thinking, ll cool j must be a joke in the rap community. this was coolio saying it, and no one takes coolio seriously. check out his guest spot on “the nanny…”
coolio’s a giant rap douche and even he couldn’t give ll cool j any respect. while nwa was rapping about racisim in the lapd, and tupac was rapping about bringing the black community together, mr. cool james was rapping about boxing or something. with titles like smokin’ dopin, mr. goodbar, and the aforementioned doin’ it, we couldn’t possibly take him seriously. the movies “toys” and “deep blue sea” were just nails in the coffin. granted, he’s a pioneer. there’s no doubt he was doing this demeaning-to-women, fluffy crap rap before anyone else. his songs are all kinds of eh. his acting blows. and as an underwear model he’s just okay.
but i guess everyone needs a fan club.
