tmnt: i remember mondo gecko as a toy, not as a cartoon character
written by geoffrey on 03/21/07

maybe my memory is failing me, but i have strong recollections of playing with mondo gecko, fugitoid the robot, and even slash — but i can’t remember one episode featuring any of those characters.

i can imagine what they might have been like, but i don’t remember any adventures they went on. of course, many of the ninja turtle toys i bought weren’t because i saw the character on tv — it was because they were in a box labelled “ninja turtles.” if they put dog shit in a ninja turtles box circa 1992, i probably would have bought it. admit it, you would have to. that’s turtle power.

Slash was Bebop’s pet turtle. They had some ooze laying around the Technodrome so they mutuated him, he ends up in New York, fights the turtles for an episode, and somehow ended up on a rocket and blasted into space.

Mondo Gecko was a Gecko who happened to be mutated right next to the turtles, but no one remembered or noticed for a few seasons. He formed a friendship with Michelangelo for about the length of one episode, I assumed they bonded over a mutual fondness for the word “dude.”

I don’t remember Fugitoid or Triceradon on the actual series. I know there’s a whole planet of Triceradons on the new series and probably in the comic books as well.

They usually tried to work the characters onto the series, but it was almost always after the toys had been introduced. Sometimes they just didn’t bother, like with Ace Duck. Ace Duck was one of the first non-Turtle mutants in the toy series and that mother fucker was never on the show. Not once.
