parenting tip #151: don’t let them watch cowboys do peyote
written by jenni on 03/14/07

young guns was one of my favorite movies as a kid. i had a vhs tape of it which my dad had recorded for me off of a non-cable channel. aka: all the cuss words were edited out. because my parents were very against foul language.  if my mom said “damn”, you knew you were really, really in for it.

what wasn’t edited out of my copy of young guns was the scene where the cowboys all take peyote before riding through an indian reservation. they get so “messed” up (notice i didn’t use “fuck” there…that one’s for mom and dad) that they either have trouble shooting their guns, or blast them off indiscriminately. and they see giant chickens.

so to sum up: in the powell household, bad language is horrible for children to witness. but taking powerful hallucinogens and playing with firearms, acceptable to watch. giant chickens…could go either way.
