james the cat: the pinnacle of human creativity

i’ve been searching youtube for this cartoon i saw on nickelodeon as a kid. It involved a creepy far side-esque character tapping on the shell of his hard-boiled egg while hearing screams from within it, until an even larger cruel person crushed his own house like an egg. i’m pretty sure that i just made that up because no one believes that it existed, and i’ve foolishly told every girlfriend i ever had about it. cite what petty grievances they may…i know everyone of them broke up with me because of that stupid cartoon.

nevertheless, in my search i found something even more distressing:

the british cartoon james the cat. as soon as you look at this stupid cat, you can tell nothing is ever going to happen on this show. wait, nevermind, he just sniffed a flower on his left. and now a flower on his right! gracious me, this is too exciting for words! i need to sit down or i’ll no doubt become catatonic with sheer fucking boredom.

upon researching james the cat, i discovered that there really isn’t much more to the show — during the first season, that is. that’s right, there were multiple seasons of this aberration. the second (and bless the lord) final season kicks off with james becoming a foreign diplomat while “he and the others travel to distant lands or receive important visitors.” whaaa? that’s a big leap. and who are these “others?” oh, a snail, a rabbit, a frog, and dennis, the pink fire-breathing welsh-accented chinese dragon. just your garden-variety british fauna.

it’s like the creator discovered pot after being threatened by network execs to spice up her show. and now i can’t decide if i never want to see any of it or won’t rest until i’ve memorized every 5-minute, glorious episode. one thing’s for sure: that theme song will be playing in my head during my next break-up.

or i could watch another british feline cartoon, henry’s cat.

    omg i believe you!! i saw that cartoon too. my sister & i would stare in mesmerized silence as we watched that one. im convinced it will pop up as an animated short on th INHD channels one of these days!

    remember “the cat came back skit”? yet, i swear i didn’t watch all that much tv as a kid….

    I’ve been looking for this egg guy myself. I remember it being shown on Nickelodeon when I was a kid, usually paired with “The Cat Came Back”. I think it must have been a Canadian cartoon because of its weirdness (No offense to Canadians).
    The only thing I remember about the cartoon is the man is sitting in front of a table about to eat a hard boiled/3-minute egg and taps on top of it. He hears a man from inside ask, “Who is it?”. He then taps again and the response is, “Whacha want?”. Again he taps and hears, “Just a minute!”. At this point the cartoon takes a dark turn and the man starts bashing the crap out of the egg and is met with cries of, “Wait! No! Stop!!!”. Its at this point that the man hears a knocking on his ceiling. Then the exact same thing happens to him.
    That’s about all I got. Pleeaasee let me know if you find this!

    I’m so glad that this cartoon left so many people disturbed and curious, like me. If anyone has access to the show Nickelodeon ran for a while, O Canada, that might be our best chance.

    Come Hell or highwater, I am going to find this egg cartoon even if I have to sadistically crack the ceilings of million egg houses to do it!

    Thank You! I’ve been searching for the “Egg Man” for so long. I too asked so many people if they had seen it and no one I know ever has. This cartoon made me feel weird inside, but in a way I guess I’m glad I’m not the only one whom it haunted. Oh yeah, by the way the scene that I remember clear as day from ‘The Cat Came Back’ was when the little bug walking along the tracks get split in half by the train. Eww.
