does anyone besides me remember glider pro?
written by geoffrey on 11/29/06

when i was a kid, i used to play a game for the mac called glider pro. you’re a paper airplane, and you go through houses, trying not to hit walls — the paper airplane’s natural enemy. if you hit walls, or randomly bouncing basketballs, you die. and the game had a feature where you could build your own levels. if you flew the glider through a level you called “fart house,” no one judged you for it.

what? you don’t believe there was such a game? here’s the evidence, jerk!

and now you can play it online, thanks to the internet and flash programming.

was i the only person in the world who played this game?

and does anyone remember that there was a race car level and an art gallery?

and that they were both awesome?

Actually, not only are you not the only one who PLAYED it, but there are those of us who still play! Unfortunately, I was too young to appreciate it in its glory days. There are still two main yahoo groups for it (I wouldn’t join Penguin’s, it’s mostly spammers) and they have links to some of the fans have some of the most amazing fansites ever, like Glider PRO Online @ http://bradshaw.no-ip.org/~samuel/glider/ or Waking Up To Glider PRO @ http://wakeup.to/gliderpro

And really, if you want it, or only didn’t like the online version because it is so… slow… download the whole deal. It’s much, much better.

thanks for filling us in, eric! since i wrote the article i did download the full version, and have been enjoying it. i’ll be sure to check out those websites, too.

that’s what i love about the internet. you think you’re the only one who knows about what you thought was an obscure game, and it turns out there’s an army of people still playing. it’s amazing.

Ah yes, Glider PRO, awesome game!

There are some fabulous fan sites out there for the game, and mine is probably not the best, but here it is, for what it’s worth:

Oh, by the way, Alex Diener’s archive is probably one of the most complete one out there for Glider PRO “houses”.
