space cats: funniest show you’ve never heard of

click here, and listen to the amazing theme song to space cats

before animaniacs taught us the subtle art of cartoon sarcasm, space cats brought into our lives a brand of self-referential humor never before seen in a saturday morning cartoon. by us, i mean the three of us who actually watched this show.

sad thing is, the three of us don’t even remember much, other than that it was awesome. little details and vague recollections: every episode opened with a puppet sequence, then went to 2D animation. the cats chased a villain named bo-gus around the world because he had committed some hilarious crime (what were the crimes? i have no idea! i just remember them being fantastic!), and the big reveal at the end of the episode was mind-blowingly awesome. (do i have an example of a reveal? nope! nobody does!) the puppet cats at the top of the show made fun of the fact that their leader’s name was DORK (played by charles nelson reilly, something i DO remember!).

everyone at my day camp talked about their favorite saturday morning cartoons. when i mentioned space cats, everyone looked at me like i had just thrown two words together to pretend like i watched tv. like i was some home school kid, or dumb religious kid.

well i’m neither! space cats forever!

lol….I remember this cartoon very well…But as you said…the details r fuzzy.

One thing I do remember is that it was BRILLIANT. Undoubtedly one of the more hilarious cartoons and a great entertainment to watch.

I’ve been searching for the theme video or even the theme song. If you happen to have it, could you send it to my gmail account. I’d really appreciate it. The nostalgic feeling was too good when I read your article.

    Another spacecats fan,
    King

I think I had to wake up at 7am to catch the show but it was always worth it. I remember one episode that revolved around those car fresheners shaped like pine trees. There was also another one involving 2 brothers (one of which, Howard, was identified as “the one that looks like an ‘H’”.

I’m been waiting for it on youtube. So far, no dice. I did find the show on wikipedia (including a link to the theme song).

Glad I’m not the only one that remember this show fondly…

After 16 years of missing my fav. cartoon, I finally tracked down 9 episodes. Anyone interested, contact me at redneckpride4ever@yahoo.com. I’m glad a special someone on youtube was able to hook me up w/ these episodes so I could share them w/ my kids.
My wife’s reaction when I started watching this (shortly after the introduction of DORC)..”You spent 16 years looking high and low for this?!”

It’s amazing that so few people know this cartoon. It was and continues to be one of my favourites - they just don’t make them like this anymore.
