video: nintendo commercial, from the “play it loud” campaign

in the 90’s, we were all drugged out, skateboarding grunge-heads, and we had one thing on our mind: playing mega man x. wait a minute. i was a nerded out, kith-watching, they might be giants-head (hand inside the puppet head?) and i was playing mega man x. and street fighter. also, i definitely was not ‘playing it loud.’ i was playing it at a considerate volume, so as not to disturb my family. somehow, i don’t think i was alone.

today, video games are cool. period. back in the early 90’s, you still had to sell the “cool kids” on video games, because systems like the snes were being played mostly by dorky kids, like my friends and I were. ten years changed all of that, and now it seems like everyone plays video games. but here’s a hilarious reminder of how nintendo desparately tried reaching out beyond its fan base to shed its kiddie, geeky image. at the time, the cool kids were playing sega. and by “cool,” i mean slightly less dorky.

Wow. I uploaded that video to YouTube (though I got it from somewhere else, long ago). I originally put in a description for it that was eerily close to your rant here–about Ninty trying to shed its wholesome image by taking Sega’s approach of advertising to assholes, and about the questionable xtr33me-ness of games like Mega Man X–but I took it down and replaced it with something w/out editorializing.

All right, maybe it’s not so weird that we had the same reaction to it. It’s probably obvious to everyone that Nintendo was embarrassing itself.
