air bud: where in the rule book?!
written by rob on 09/06/06

note: there are very few air bud clips online. enjoy this “storybook” version of the trailer.

recently, i watched air bud, the classic story of a dog who turns around a rag-tag basketball team with his remarkable basketball skills. the movie was developing nicely, until someone contested the dog’s legality to play basketball, which prompted a second man to shouted the classic, “where in the rule book” phrase. the book in question is the book which stipulates rules of given pee-wee sports.

my gripe is with the person who makes sport manuals in real life. if sports-rulebook-makers watch these movies that get by on the flimsy premise of “where in the rule book,” then these real life sports-rulebook-makers are morally obligated to stop this madness!

if we can create a world in which a standard players manual reads, “Rule 7: Dogs Can’t Play Basketball”, hack hollywood writers will be forced to find a more legitimate reason for various animals to play organized sports. that’s a win-win.

finally, if I were a parent of a seven-year-old in air bud, and my offensive strategy for my child was to have him “aim a pistol at the chest of any opposing defender,” would I be cleared of conspiracy simply because of a vague rule book? i should say not! all i am is asking for is a little discretion from the hollywood community, before it’s too late and jellyfish are competing in spelling bees.
