the vacant lot: 90’s sketch comedy that’ll confuse your children

video: ‘customs’ by canadian sketch troupe the vacant lot

immediatley after september 11th, there were no words to describe it. i mean literally, we didn’t know what to call the damn thing. “the attacks on the world trade center and tower II”? “suicide bombings”? “hijacked airliners crashed into buildings day”? only later did we come up with the phrase “9/11″, and the world’s been a better place ever since.

well, that’s exactly how i felt as a kid about this sketch from the vacant lot. i had no words to describe it. it was like nothing i had ever seen on tv before, or anywhere for that matter. they fed a guy toy cars, strung him up, and had latino kids hit him in the stomach with a stick? on tv?

ghostbusters made sense to me, because they were like firefighters but for ghosts. the early death of my grandfather made sense to me, because god was very upset with him. but the vacant lot? not knowing what the hell was going on gave me (and still gives me) a headache. i gotta have control to be happy!

Oh, man, I loved this show. They only made six episodes, but somehow I got them all on tape through a marathon. It was a pretty good show. Kind of like the Kids in the Hall, but with better musical skits.
