racist roddy piper?
written by eric on 08/17/06

i love professional wrestling. and my favorite professional wrestler of all time is “rowdy” roddy piper. even as a little kid, i liked him more than hulk hogan. it was probably “john carpenter’s they live” that gave him the advantage over the immortal one.

but as much as i love roddy piper, i have no idea what is going on in this interview. you see the “hot rod” was feuding with “bad news” brown at the time. brown was like the blaxploitation kung-fu wrestler of the wwf (his finishing maneuver was a round-house kick called “the ghetto blaster”).

and just when you have all the answers, roddy piper likes to change the questions - so this is what he offered Brown and us, the wwf-viewing audience. i may have only been six years old, and i may have only learned about martin luther king every february, but something told me that this wasn’t a good idea.

I totally remember this. But it wasn’t just this once. Roddy actually wrestled Bad News in half-blackface! At Wrestlemania! The biggest show of the year in 1989 or 1990 or whenever this was. They could never get away with this today.

This has nothing to do with racism or insanity. In an interview in I think 2003 Roddy said, he did this to show the “True Colors” (the song “True Colors” was a big hit in the 80s for Cyndi Lauper, who was, at that time, also quite a bit into the wrestling business and one of THOSE people, who made Wrestlemania the big event that is was). Not to mention the back story, which is that the paint was a certain waterproof paint which required a special solution to take it off with after the match, which never happened, because some people decided to change the solution against simple water, so Roddy had to run around half white half black for a couple of days. Poor Roddy. :(

Besides, I know that such a good and down to earth person like Roddy would never be a racist or hurt anyone in any way (unless he has to act like he would, for example in a storyline in wrestling). ^^
