wikipedia on oedekerk’s “thumb wars”
written by geoffrey on 08/01/06

Here’s today’s reason why you should love the Wikipedia. This is a quote from the Wikipedia’s entry on Steve Oedekerk’s Star Wars take off, Thumb Wars:

Oedekerk created a spoof of the space drama Star Wars with characters such as Loke Groundrunner (parody of Luke Skywalker), Princess Bunhead (parody of Princess Leia), Oobedoob Benubi (parody of Obi-wan Kenobi), Hand Duet (parody of Han Solo), Crunchy (parody of Chewbacca), Beboobeep (parody of R2-D2), Prissypeo (parody of C-3PO) and Black Helmet Man (parody of archvillian Darth Vader).

I was watching this film, very alone and lonely, thinking “these thumb puppets are goofing on characters I’m already familiar with, but I can’t quite figure out which ones. Bunhead? Buns On Her Head? Black Helmet? Ghaa! This is gonna drive me crazy — wait, there’s a community encyclopedia! Maybe that can help me. ‘Help Me, Wikipedia. You’re my only help.’ Uh oh. NOW what am I making fun of? Back to the drawing board!”

One thing this entry is missing, however, is an explaination for why “Loke Groundrunner” counts as a joke in Oedekirk’s mind. What’s a Loke, Steve? Is it just “Luke” with an O to replace the U? Nice!

Not once have I ever been tempted to watch Thumb Wars. The entire concept seemed so insanely retarded.
